Pure Substance and Mixtures

Is Black Marker Really Black?

Experiment Question:

  • What is the difference between a mixture and a pure substance?

Definitions:

  • Pure Substance: A substance in which there is only ONE type of particle
  • Mixture: A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.

Materials:

  • 400 ml plastic beaker
  • Paper towel
  • Water
  • 6 Black Markers

Procedure:

  1. Fill the plastic 400 ml beaker with water 1 cm high

  2. With the Bic marker, write the number 1 on the left side of the paper towel. Make sure the number is 2 cm above the bottom of the paper towel

  3. Repeat this for the remaining markers, Marks-A-Lot - 2, Crayola - 3, Sharpie - 4, Expo - 5, and Vis A Vis - 6.

  4. This is what it should look like:
  5. Slide the paper towel into the 400 ml beaker so the bottom of the paper towel touches the water. Make sure the water does not Directly touch the numbers when you first place the paper towel in the water!!

  6. Leave the paper towel in the water.  You should notice that the paper towel will soak the water and go up the paper towel.  The longer you leave the paper towel in the water, Record your observations.

        Results/Data Table:

Pure Substance/ Mixture

Observation

1 - Bic

Pure Substances

stayed the same

2 - Marks -A- Lot

Pure Substances

Stayed the same

3 - Crayola

Mixture

Green, Blue, and Black

4 - Sharpie

Pure Substance

Stayed the same

5 - Expo

Pure Substance

Stayed the same

6 - Vis A Vis

Mixture

Yellow, Brown, Purple, blue and black

Data Analysis;

1. Looking at your observations, how did you tell if the marker was a mixture or a pure substance?

Material

Description

Pure Substance or Mixture?

Charcoal

Does not separate into different substances when melted

pure substance

Salt Water

Separates into salt and water when it is boiled

Mixture

Air

Separates into different gases (nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen)

Mixture

Aluminum

When heated aluminum does not separate into different substances

Pure substance

Paper

When cut, separates into smaller pieces of paper

Pure substance

Brass

Separates into different metals

Mixture

Other Notes: (use pages 82-91 in your textbook)

1. Find three examples of a pure substance and get an image for each one.

Pure Substance Image of Pure Substance
Example 1: cobalt
Example 2:nickel
Example 3:Iron

2. Find three examples of a mixture and get an image for each one.

Example 1:PIZZA
Example 2:Soda
Example 3: Lasangna

3. What are the two types of Pure Substances? and Define both types of Pure Substances.

Element

4. Elements are divided into 3 categories.  Name the three.

5. Complete the chart below

Can it be broken down into smaller, simpler substances? Can it be broken down by a Physical Change? Can it be broken down by a Chemical Change?

Summary:

Partner 1 Summary
Partner 2 Summary
I learned if either a marker was a pure substance or a mixture. for einstince a sharpie was a pure substance and a Bic is a mixture cause it shows colors when it is wet and a dry paper cloth. and sometimes it would be green, black, and blue Today i learned how to find whether a marker is a mixture or a substance. A mixture is when the marker had more than one colors like green, blue, brown etc. And a substance is when the marker has no other color except its own.

Partner 3 Summary
Partner 4 Summary
Today we did experiments on markers to see if they were pure substances or solution. I learned that the crayola isnt really black. It has 3 different colors wich are green, blue, and black. Today I learned that black marker isnt really black. Like a crayola marker is a mixture. It turned green, blue, and black.
